{"id":10134,"date":"2020-05-04T16:49:20","date_gmt":"2020-05-04T21:49:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/?p=10134"},"modified":"2020-05-04T16:49:22","modified_gmt":"2020-05-04T21:49:22","slug":"uw-stevens-point-is-cooking-up-something-special-for-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/2020\/05\/04\/uw-stevens-point-is-cooking-up-something-special-for-students\/","title":{"rendered":"UW-Stevens Point is cooking up something special for students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When COVID-19 took her food and nutrition students out of their  kitchen classroom, a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point faculty member brought her kitchen to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Lecturer Deborah Tang has been cooking up videos in her own kitchen since the end of March to share with the 12 students in her Introductory Foods class. During the last five weeks, she has demonstrated recipes of a variety of foods, from tofu and vegetables to English muffin bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tang posts a video for her class each Monday, then shares them on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/HPHDuwsp\/219090592784703\/\">Facebook<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLbt_N07wWtVnX1TMGHSFOnZybKfTF1jPr\">YouTube<\/a>&nbsp;for the public. Her daughter, Sabrina, a college student now at home, helps with the filming and editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cooking With Deb\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=PLbt_N07wWtVnX1TMGHSFOnZybKfTF1jPr\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tang\u2019s recipes match the weekly theme being studied at home by her students. Majoring in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/dietetics\">dietetics<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/sustainablefood\">sustainable food and nutrition<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/fcs\">family and consumer sciences<\/a>, these students are doing much of the same work as their instructor, filming a one- to two-minute video of their  preparation process and sharing photos of their ingredients and finished products. They also have a weekly Zoom meeting and post on discussion  boards to maintain a connection with each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeveral students have shared that they enjoy the home labs, and I\u2019m seeing improvements in their presentation skills each week,\u201d said Tang. \u201cTheir families are also enjoying their cooking and asking them to prepare their favorites again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The videos are gaining \u201clikes\u201d and comments on Facebook, as well as support from Tang\u2019s colleagues, former students and UW-Stevens Point  friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has been great having feedback from our alumni and connecting with them, even in a small way, and knowing they are doing well in this  time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that she is more comfortable with recording her lectures and cooking videos, Tang says she won\u2019t hesitate to add video to her courses  if it will enhance student learning and comprehension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI give a lot of credit to my daughter for her help,\u201d she said. \u201cShe gets to enjoy the recipes I prepare after the filming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>Related Links: <\/strong><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin\/story\/uw-stevens-point-is-cooking-up-something-special-for-students\/\">UW System &#8211; All in Wisconsin<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/ucm\/news\/Pages\/DTangCookingVideos.aspx\">UWSP University Communications and Marketing<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When COVID-19 took her food and nutrition students out of their kitchen classroom, a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point faculty member brought her kitchen to them.
