{"id":10248,"date":"2020-06-29T08:51:48","date_gmt":"2020-06-29T13:51:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/?p=10248"},"modified":"2020-08-03T20:18:33","modified_gmt":"2020-08-04T01:18:33","slug":"alum-returns-to-lead-uw-stevens-point-rotc-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/2020\/06\/29\/alum-returns-to-lead-uw-stevens-point-rotc-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Alum returns to lead UW-Stevens Point ROTC program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/rotc\/Pages\/Staff\/dBurroughs.aspx\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"150\" height=\"210\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/burroughsdax.jpg\" alt=\"MAJ Burroughs\" class=\"wp-image-10249\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Professor of Military Science MAJ Dax Burroughs<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For just the third time since 1968, a decorated military alum has taken the helm of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/rotc\">Army ROTC program<\/a> at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/rotc\/Pages\/Staff\/dBurroughs.aspx\">MAJ Dax Burroughs<\/a> returns to campus and his hometown as the new department chair and professor of military science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MAJ Burroughs, who replaces LTC Wendy Tokach, was born and raised in Stevens Point. He enlisted in the Wisconsin Army National Guard as a combat engineer in 1998 and joined the UW-Stevens Point Army ROTC program in 2001. MAJ Burroughs received his commission in the active service in December 2004 and graduated with Bachelor of Arts in Political Science while earning the Chancellor\u2019s Leadership Award.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am so fortunate to have the opportunity to positively\nimpact the organization and community that successfully started me out in my\nmilitary career and impacted my entire adult life in such beneficial ways,\u201d\nsaid MAJ Burroughs. \u201cThe stars aligned and I find myself in what I consider the\nright job, at the right time, in the right location.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"270\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Burroughs-CLA-270x300.jpg\" alt=\"Burroughs\" class=\"wp-image-10250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Burroughs-CLA-270x300.jpg 270w, https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Burroughs-CLA-768x852.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Burroughs-CLA-923x1024.jpg 923w, https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Burroughs-CLA.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><figcaption>MAJ Dax Burroughs with his father at the 2004 UW-Stevens Point Chancellor&#8217;s Leadership Awards ceremony.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating from UW-Stevens Point, MAJ Burroughs\nattended the Ordnance Officers Basic Course at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland,\nand subsequently was assigned to the 194th Maintenance Battalion Camp\nHumphries, Republic of Korea where he served as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic\nPlatoon leader and then the Ground Support Equipment Platoon Leader in the 520th\nMaintenance Company.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon return from the Republic of Korea, MAJ Burroughs was\nassigned to the 187th Ordnance Battalion, Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where\nhe served as a Company Executive Officer in C Co. He later took command of A\nCompany under the same battalion and then deployed to Region Command East,\nGardez Afghanistan as a Provincial Reconstruction Team Supply Officer. Following\nthis deployment, MAJ Burroughs returned to the 187th Ordnance Battalion and\nserved as the Battalion Operations Officer.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MAJ Burroughs attended the Military Intelligence Captains\nCareer Course at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, as well as the Brigade Intelligence\nOfficers Course. He was then assigned to the Headquarters, Headquarter Battery,\n3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division and served as the battalion Intelligence\nOfficer. Just prior to his second deployment, MAJ Burroughs was reassigned as\nthe battalion Intelligence Officer to the 1st Battalion 26th Infantry Regiment,\n3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division and deployed to Khost province in\nAfghanistan. Upon returning from this deployment, MAJ Burroughs took command of\nthe Military Intelligence Company under the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd\nBrigade, 1st Infantry Division. After relinquishing command, he was reassigned\nto serve as the assistant professor of Military Science at Loyola University Chicago.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon being promoted to the rank of major in 2015, MAJ Burroughs relocated to Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, to attend his Intermediate Level Education as an exchange officer with the Air Force at the Air Command and Staff College. There he received a Master of Military Operational Art and Science degree. MAJ Burroughs then relocated to Yongsan, Republic of Korea, where he was the Deputy Chief of Engagement and Policy for the Special United States Liaison Advisor Korea. Completing that assignment MAJ Burroughs transitioned to be the Brigade Intelligence Officer at the 181st Multi-Functional Training Brigade (MFTB) at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, and then to the Battalion Executive Officer position within the 1st Battalion 310th Regiment, Brigade Engineer Battalion within in the 181st MFTB. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Burroughs-Ferrel-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Burroughs and Ferrel\" class=\"wp-image-10251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Burroughs-Ferrel-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Burroughs-Ferrel-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Burroughs-Ferrel-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Burroughs-Ferrel.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>MAJ Dax Burroughs at UW-Stevens Point graduation in 2004 with MAJ Douglas Ferrel who helped him get into the ROTC program.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>MAJ Burroughs\u2019s career came full circle in June 2020 when he was selected to lead the Army ROTC Northwoods Battalion and became the 21st professor of military science at UW-Stevens Point. The two previous alumni to return to the program as the senior officer were LTC Ralph Sliwicki \u201984 in 2000-03 and LTC Ed Ripp \u201989 in 2003-05.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI daydreamed about being here in this capacity, but knew\nthe odds were slim at best, and yet here I find myself after 16 years of\nservice and travel spanning the globe,\u201d said MAJ Burroughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MAJ Burroughs\u2019 awards and decorations include the Bronze\nStar, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC),\nArmy Commendation Medal (2 OLC), Army Achievement medal (4 OLC), Military\nOutstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, the Parachutist\nBadge, the Air Assault badge, the German Armed Forces Badge (Gold), and the\nNorwegian Military Foot March Badge (Bronze). <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For just the third time since 1968, a decorated military alum has taken the helm of the Army ROTC program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
