{"id":10259,"date":"2020-07-01T08:23:26","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T13:23:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/?p=10259"},"modified":"2020-07-19T20:27:38","modified_gmt":"2020-07-20T01:27:38","slug":"school-of-health-sciences-and-wellness-launch-expands-student-opportunities-community-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/2020\/07\/01\/school-of-health-sciences-and-wellness-launch-expands-student-opportunities-community-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Health Sciences and Wellness Launch Expands Student Opportunities, Community Impact"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UW-Stevens Point School of Health Sciences and Wellness\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KL8MITSZ7iw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Students studying health-related fields at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will now benefit from enhanced, enriched and expanded curriculum and out-of-the-classroom opportunities with the launch of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/health\">School of Health Sciences and Wellness<\/a>, effective July 1, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The School of Health Sciences and Wellness brings together 10 undergraduate majors and 12 graduate programs under one roof from three former schools\u2013Communication Sciences and Disorders; Health Care Professions; and Health Promotion and Human Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As health professionals begin taking an integrative approach to focus on addressing the whole person, this powerhouse school allows for integrated curriculum and weaves a unique wellness thread throughout that UW-Stevens Point as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/health\/Pages\/about\/BirthplaceWellness.aspx\">birthplace of wellness<\/a> is known for around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/health\/Pages\/facultystaff\/rsommer.aspx\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/health\/Faculty%20Staff%20Library\/_w\/SommerRebecca_jpg.jpg\" alt=\"Rebecca Sommer\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Rebecca Sommer, Ph.D.<br>Assistant Dean<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe new school will promote personal wellness in our students to prepare them for the often high-stress careers in health care and community health,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/health\/Pages\/facultystaff\/rsommer.aspx\">Rebecca Sommer, Ph.D.<\/a>, who was named the school\u2019s first assistant dean. \u201cWe will focus on the strengths of our individual disciplines and teach those skills and concepts more broadly in order to benefit all health students.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether students know exactly what their future health care career\nplans are, or they want to explore all the options to help people, the School\nof Health Sciences and Wellness is set up to share introductory courses and allow students to more seamlessly\ntransition between health-related majors as they discover their purpose and\nrefine their career aspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Skills like motivational interviewing, family budget management, or engaging children in play as part of treatment are examples of ways we will better prepare all of our students through this model which increases synergies and collaboration,\u201d said Sommer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Communities\u2013especially rural areas in Central and Northern Wisconsin\u2013will also feel a positive impact of the new school as graduates will put their newly honed skills to work in clinical settings, nonprofit organizations, schools and community settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur graduates will learn how to integrate\nprevention with treatment. They will infuse components that support health\nequity, social determinants of health, and mental health,\u201d said Sommer. \u201cThis\nis never more important than in today&#8217;s world!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The school will hold classes and have\noffices throughout the College of Professional Studies Building, Marshfield\nClinic Health System Champions Hall and the Science Building where the main\noffice will be located. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Undergraduate Majors:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/health\/Pages\/Major\/cls.aspx\">clinical laboratory science<\/a> (medical technology;
