A Celebration of UW-Stevens Point Textile Arts and Design Application\u201d was held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11-12, featuring tours of local textile and craft companies, presentations, workshops, a design showcase and fashion show. Instructors were UW-Stevens Point alumni, faculty and staff as well as local experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFamily and consumer sciences was founded as home economics and has a rich history at UW-Stevens Point,\u201d said Associate Professor Susan Turgeson, coordinator of family and consumer science education.\u00a0\u201cWe are proud to be one of the legacy programs at UWSP and to have not only survived but thrived throughout the decades.\u00a0The program continues to prepare students to be leaders in the field across the country and is recognized for the quality of curriculum, hands-on experiences and leadership opportunities provided.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-msp1-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/v\/t39.30808-6\/315280833_663161148550589_4389290420878375517_n.jpg?_nc_cat=103&amp;ccb=1-7&amp;_nc_sid=0debeb&amp;_nc_ohc=dV0XuefEnj4AX9fFB35&amp;_nc_ht=scontent-msp1-1.xx&amp;oh=00_AfD52sURv_HpKsaeVXZZUmDP3AVVzQUKdbkEEFWWhOJqaA&amp;oe=63776CE4\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A highlight on Saturday was the presentation of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/uwsphealth\/posts\/pfbid02LemLdpT4kWVHtuF9Rtze5ezjqjRRL7XH2ip2mkY6TULYNDA3dUaedvPGTQeS3Marl\">Quilts of Valor<\/a>\u201d to three Vietnam veterans, including Chancellor Emeritus Bernie Patterson and alumni John Brandenburg and Paul Miller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following events were offered during the two-day event:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Tours of local companies, including Herrschners, Lands\u2019 End, Antoinette\u2019s Quilt Shop and Wisconsin Wool Exchange<\/li><li>\u201cWhat You Need to Know to Prepare Students for a Career in Interior Architecture\u201d \u2013 panel of interior architecture faculty<\/li><li>\u201cTeaching Textiles in the Classroom\u201d \u2013 Alyssa Simono<\/li><li>\u201cCricut Workshop\u201d \u2013 Jan Oswald<\/li><li>Design showcase and fashion show<\/li><li>\u201cCreating Patterns and Selling Your Knit Items\u201d \u2013 Bethany Buenning and Tess Ligocki<\/li><li>\u201cFelting and creating wool mittens\u201d \u2013 Julie Woletz<\/li><li>\u201cPaper Arts to Gift or Keep\u201d \u2013 Cathy Lader<\/li><li>\u201cTextile Teaching Strategies with <em>FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America<\/em>)\u201d \u2013 Dee Dee Giovingo<\/li><li>\u201cQuilts of Valor\u201d presentation \u2013 Mary Fawcett and Sue Strutz<\/li><li>\u201cCostuming and Quilting\u201d \u2013 Terri Williams<\/li><li>\u201cThese are the \u2018Gnome\u2019ments\u201d \u2013 Susan Turgeson<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A celebration of 120 years of home economics education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point included two days of events to mark the university\u2019s family and consumer sciences and interior architecture programs.
