[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UWSPeducation\/posts\/pfbid0rS6NtbRveyF2C7stMpNaU96b4ZeyBbj4cnMJGvY7SP1Ddqc2jGFJ4CsySJwUMqW8l\">View Photos<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s summit themed, \u201cThe Power of You,\u201d was intended for students in grades 9-12 and included speakers and competitive events. It provided high schoolers who may be interested in becoming teachers with inspiration from some of the state\u2019s best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery child deserves highly skilled teachers,\u201d said Lynda Fernholz, UW-Stevens Point professor and assistant dean for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\">School of Education<\/a>. \u201cEducators Rising provides opportunities to explore education career opportunities, develop skills necessary for effective teaching and make informed decisions about pathways for achieving their goals. The organization also cultivates highly skilled educators by guiding young people beginning in high school and extending through college and into the profession.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the third year in row UWSP has been the host institution for the event, demonstrating how the \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/education\/Pages\/harju\/default.aspx\">Harju Center for Equity in Education<\/a> at UW-Stevens Point aims to empower learners though collaborative, inclusive and sustainable opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/educatorsrising2023c.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/educatorsrising2023c-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Kabby Hong\" class=\"wp-image-12180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/educatorsrising2023c-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/educatorsrising2023c-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/educatorsrising2023c-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/educatorsrising2023c.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kabby Hong<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Keynote speaker Kabby Hong was the 2022 Wisconsin Teacher of the Year, member of the Wisconsin Education Association Council and English teacher in the Verona Area School District. He presented on \u201cThe Power of Visibility,\u201d focusing on the importance of Asian American Pacific Islander visibility in school curriculum and how that is connected to the physical, psychological and emotional safety of these students in our schools and communities. Hong has earned awards from Stanford University and the University of Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wisconsin State Superintendent Jill Underly also shared her background and reason for loving the field of education with Educators Rising Summit attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students attended breakout sessions led by award-winning teachers, K-12 teachers and social workers, statewide university faculty and Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of competitive events and  contests were held about lesson planning, leadership, public  speaking, research and ethics. Educators Rising can and will play a key role in addressing the teacher shortage in the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1894, the School of Education has been the hub of teacher preparation  programs at UW-Stevens Point. It prepares future teachers majoring in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/education\/Pages\/earlychildhood.aspx\">early childhood education<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/education\/Pages\/elementary.aspx\">elementary education<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/education\/Pages\/physicaleducation.aspx\">physical education<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/education\/Pages\/specialeducation.aspx\">special education<\/a>.
