From colds to flu season, and leftover Halloween candy to holiday binge eating; it seems everyone partakes in at least some unhealthy activities. I have already had a bad cold this year and I am determined to stay healthy, fit and happy for the rest of the year. I thought I would share some of my tips to stay healthy and fit not only for this time of year, but all year around at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.<\/p>\n<p>First and most obviously, avoid getting sick. It\u2019s easier said than done but there are a lot of little things to do in order to reduce your chance of getting really sick this fall and winter. Make sure you get your flu shot; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/stuhealth\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Health Services in Delzell Hall<\/a> usually has a clinic around this time of year for students and it\u2019s free! Then of course there are common sense things like drink a lot of fluids, get your dose of vitamin C, and wash your hands, etc. I have heard that called \u2018self-care,\u2019 which encompasses everything like that. If you do happen to get sick make an appointment at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/stuhealth\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Health Services<\/a> if you need to see a doctor, or you can go in without an appointment if you just have a cold and they will look you over can give you some medicine (cough drops, ibuprofen) if need be to make you feel better. UWSP students pay a segregated fee to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/stuhealth\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Health Services<\/a> every semester, so if you\u2019re sick take advantage of it!<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/11\/debot.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3952 alignright\" alt=\"debot\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/11\/debot.jpg\" width=\"255\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a>The next couple of tips have to do with eating habits; these can apply to both students who have a meal plan and those who do not. Around this time of year I feel that many students tend to overeat for a variety of different reasons. First is because we are stressed trying to finish the semester and we eat too much due to the stress. Another reason is because of the holidays and let\u2019s be honest, everyone overeats during the holiday season. Finally, we overeat because we can; if you have a meal plan you probably go to Upper DeBot almost everyday where the set up is buffet style (aka all-you-can-eat). The trick to avoid overeating is just making sure you take the right portions and only put what you can eat on your plate. Just because you can fit five pounds of food on one plate doesn\u2019t mean you should and also make sure you\u2019re picking healthy foods (put some veggies on that plate!). Make sure you\u2019re only eating three meals a day, with healthy snacks in between if need be. I think here we run into the problem of eating unhealthy, and typically processed foods. Everyone likes foods that can be quickly made like something that is microwaveable. However I would recommend that you read the label first, if you don\u2019t know all the ingredients in that package, is that some you really want to put into your body? Sometimes it may seems easier or cheaper to buy frozen things that you just need to heat up quick, but is it really worth it to put all those junk ingredients in you? Make sure when you grab a snack is something that\u2019s actually beneficial to you and going to hold you over to the next meal, like trail mix or veggies and hummus. I\u2019m not a dietetics major, but I know we have a great <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/HPHD\/Pages\/dietetics\/default.aspx\">dietetics program<\/a> on campus and some of those students run the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/HPHD\/Pages\/cpsCafe\/default.aspx\">CPS Caf\u00e9<\/a>. Everyday they make homemade meals and everyone on campus should try it out! I love the soup there!<\/p>\n<p>Another thing to pay attention to is your drinking habits. I know I mentioned earlier about getting the right about of fluids to keep from getting sick and I can\u2019t stress that enough. Take a water bottle to class and sip it during the lecture. I do that and I can drink a whole water bottle in an hour or so without even realizing it! Also pay attention to your alcohol consumption; if your already overeating for the holidays don\u2019t add extra calories from alcohol.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/11\/1384035_559856084063606_251286817_n.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-3953\" alt=\"1384035_559856084063606_251286817_n\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/11\/1384035_559856084063606_251286817_n.jpg\" width=\"576\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Finally, take advantage of fitness resources on campus. I\u2019m pretty sure I\u2019ve mentioned the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/centers\/healthwellness\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Allen Center<\/a> at least once or twice but I can\u2019t get over everything they offer. They are still selling memberships for the cardio center (and it\u2019s discounted since we\u2019re part way through the year)! Don\u2019t forget about the free group classes, we just entered a new block so take a look at the new schedule, maybe there is a class that fits into your schedule that you couldn&#8217;t take before. Keep in mind that there are many other ways to stay fit around Stevens Point that don\u2019t include a fitness center. You can take a bike ride or run on the <a href=\"http:\/\/greencircletrail.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Green Circle<\/a>, or go Frisbee golfing at <a href=\"http:\/\/stevenspoint.com\/index.aspx?NID=157\" target=\"_blank\">Yulga Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I know that\u2019s a lot to take in but really I think a lot of it is common sense and there are a lot of resources on campus to help you out if need be. Just be mindful of what you put into your body and your actions day to day. Personally I am trying to make in to the end of this year without getting sick again and without gaining any weight.
