The event,<strong> Focal Point 2011: Celebrating a year of successful collaborations<\/strong>, included presentations by 10 university faculty and staff engaged in research toward sustainability solutions.<\/p>\n<p>In his presentation, &#8220;Developing a Nature-based Business and Marketing Approach for Treehaven,&#8221; Leschke explained how a business model framework helps define opportunities for economic sustainability. Leschke&#8217;s BUS 421 Advanced Entrepreneurship class developed successful strategies for <a href=\"http:\/\/www4.uwsp.edu\/cnr\/treehaven\/\">Treehaven<\/a> (a residential natural resources education and conference facility located between Rhinelander and Tomahawk) by identifying problems and implementing solutions.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/10\/WIST201110.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-461\" title=\"WIST 2011\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/10\/WIST201110.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Ben Brancel, secretary of Wisconsin\u2019s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/urc\/news_archive\/Pages\/brancelWISTevent.aspx\">provided keynote remarks<\/a> at a networking breakfast for university, business and civic leaders to begin the day at Focal Point.<\/p>\n<p>In its first year of existence, WIST has supported early stage applied research that has potential to sustain and create new jobs in manufacturing, energy, water quality and sustainability. WIST biofuels research and the institute\u2019s research into new, value-added uses of agricultural and forest resources aim to boost the state\u2019s economy, areas that intersect with DATCP\u2019s charge to help develop Wisconsin\u2019s growing bio-industry.
