The Pointers defeated St. Norbert College, 5-1, for their fifth title after consecutive runner-up finishes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been an unbelievable feeling to win a championship,\u201d Dixon said with a smile. \u201cI think it\u2019s finally starting to set in. It took a while to believe because it\u2019s been such a big goal for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet that\u2019s just part of his success. He\u2019s also achieved high academic benchmarks and received several accolades in his time at UW-Stevens Point including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a 3.97 grade-point average. He is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/busecon\/Pages\/major.aspx?name=Business%20Administration\">business administration major<\/a> with a <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.uwsp.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=5&amp;poid=1925&amp;returnto=208\">double emphasis<\/a> in marketing, and finance, insurance and real estate (FIRE). He hopes to stay involved with hockey as a coach or player after graduating in May and start a career in real estate investing, possibly in Michigan, where he already owns a real estate license;<\/li>\n<li>the <a href=\"http:\/\/athletics.uwsp.edu\/news\/2016\/3\/7\/dixon-named-2016-mens-hockey-max-sparger-scholar-athlete.aspx?path=mhockey\">Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award<\/a>, given to a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Conference (WIAC) men\u2019s hockey competitor who has at least two years of athletics experience and is in his last year of competition; and<\/li>\n<li>the national <a href=\"http:\/\/athletics.uwsp.edu\/news\/2016\/3\/25\/mens-hockey-dixn-earns-elite-90-award.aspx?path=mhockey\">Elite 90 award<\/a>, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA&#8217;s national championships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/athletics.uwsp.edu\/images\/2015\/11\/7\/20151106_091.jpg?width=1000&amp;height=566&amp;bgcolor=black&amp;mode=crop&amp;anchor=topcenter\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"328\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Time management has been vital to that success between academics, practices, volunteering as a youth hockey coach, time spent as a <a href=\"http:\/\/athletics.uwsp.edu\/sports\/2007\/9\/7\/SAAC.aspx?tab=s.a.a.c.\">Student Athletic Advisory Committee<\/a> member, and training in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/centers\/hec\/Pages\/About\/StrengthFitness.aspx\">Strength Fitness Center<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/athletics.uwsp.edu\/coaches.aspx?rc=931&amp;path=mhockey\">UW-Stevens Point men\u2019s hockey coach Chris Brooks<\/a> has been an important mentor to Dixon in learning those skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has taught me valuable lessons about leadership and accountability,\u201d Dixon said of his coach. \u201cI\u2019m extremely lucky to have had him for four years. Not everyone can have the same coach throughout college and I\u2019m grateful he\u2019s been mine. He challenges everyone to be their best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dixon looked at other schools, although UW-Stevens Point immediately felt like home for its academics, athletics and just-right size when Brooks encouraged him to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/visit\">visit<\/a> in 2012. In encouraging other young hockey players choosing schools to select UW-Stevens Point, Dixon said, \u201cIt\u2019s a culture you want to be a part of because it will make you better as a person and as a hockey player. Right now we have the best hockey team in the country. I don\u2019t know why anyone wouldn\u2019t want to be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dixon identified <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/busecon\/Pages\/Faculty\/dschalow.aspx\">Associate Professor David Schalow<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/busecon\/Pages\/Faculty\/lmatesi.aspx\">Assistant Professor Lyna Matesi<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/busecon\/Pages\/default.aspx\">School of Business and Economics<\/a> as two of his favorite instructors at UW-Stevens Point. He said Schalow has been instrumental in helping him see how he can become a real estate investor, and Matesi \u201creally gets to know her students. She offers real-life situations in her classes and puts everything in a way so that we can understand it.
