The School of Education associate professor combines the two every summer at Camp Phoojywg-Friend, a two-week camp that offers basic Hmong cultural lessons that focus on the ethnic group&#8217;s history, music, folklore, art and language in Wausau.<\/p>\n<p>For her efforts, Herr has earned the inaugural UW-Stevens Point College of Professional Studies <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/cps\/Pages\/heroesaward.aspx\">Ethel and Ward Cable Family Faculty Heroes Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Herr, along with alum Yauo Yang, a social studies teacher at D.C. Everest Middle School, will use the award to create internships for college students wanting to help organize or teach at Camp Phoojywg-Friend.<\/p>\n<p>One purpose for the camp is to help young Hmong children learn about their own culture and history \u2014 knowledge that is slowly eroding as the Hmong people as a group become more rooted in America.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/puMfqpggDHA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div>The <strong>Ethel and Ward Cable Family Faculty Heroes Award<\/strong> honors one College of Professional Studies faculty or staff member each year who has done something heroic. In some cases the recipient has been heavily involved in an organization or community activity, in other cases they have developed a program to meet a community need or the needs of an individual; and in many cases they involved UW-Stevens Point students in their cause. The award will include a $1,000 (non-salary) grant to advance the work of the program or cause.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This fund was established by Dick Cable and Judy Cable Anderson, as an opportunity for the Cable Family to honor their mother and Father, Ethel and Ward Cable. This fund provides additional financial support to a faculty and\/or department program or initiative that is deemed \u201cheroic\u201d in nature by the dean of the College of Professional Studies.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maysee Yang Herr is passionate about education and her culture.
