{"id":723,"date":"2011-11-16T15:39:12","date_gmt":"2011-11-16T21:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/?p=723"},"modified":"2011-11-16T15:39:12","modified_gmt":"2011-11-16T21:39:12","slug":"introducing-the-school-of-physical-education-athletic-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/2011\/11\/16\/introducing-the-school-of-physical-education-athletic-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing the School of Physical Education &amp; Athletic Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/11\/PEAT201111.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-729\" title=\"PEAT201111\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/cps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/11\/PEAT201111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has announced a new name and restructuring for one of its schools.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"mailto:http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/peat\/Pages\/default.aspx\">School of Physical Education &amp; Athletic Training<\/a> (PEAT) was approved as the new name of the former School of Health, Exercise Science and Athletics (HESA), while the <a href=\"http:\/\/athletics.uwsp.edu\/\">Department of Athletics<\/a> will now be separate from the school. The name change was approved by the UWSP Faculty Senate and Chancellor Bernie Patterson.<\/p>\n<p>The school, which is housed within the College of Professional Studies and the Health Enhancement Center, includes academic areas of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/peat\/athltraining\/Pages\/default.aspx\">athletic training<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/peat\/Pages\/PhysicalEd\/default.aspx\">physical education<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/peat\/Pages\/Academics\/adaptedPeMinor.aspx\">adapted physical education<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/peat\/Pages\/Academics\/adventureEd.aspx\">adventure education<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/peat\/Pages\/Academics\/coaching.aspx\">coaching<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/peat\/Pages\/Academics\/healthEducation.aspx\">health education<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/hphd\/Pages\/strengthConditioning.aspx\">strength and conditioning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis name change more accurately reflects the professional training that we offer in our physical education and athletic training majors,\u201d said Rory Suomi, Ph.D., associate dean and head of PEAT. \u201cIt also allows for the development of the Department of Athletics, separate from the former School of HESA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UWSP Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) is one of the top programs of its kind in the Midwest with 100% placement of graduates in athletic training jobs or graduate studies. The ATEP is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) and was awarded\u00a0Continuing Accreditation for 10 years in August 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The physical education program has three distinct practicum experiences on the elementary, adapted and middle\/secondary levels. Students are the physical education teachers for a local private school and teach students with disabilities on campus.<\/p>\n<p><em>The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College of Professional Studies consists of <a title=\"Academic Departments \/ Units\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/cps\/Pages\/programs.aspx\">eight academic units<\/a>, which house 15 different undergraduate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/cps\/Pages\/programs.aspx\">majors<\/a>, 17 <a title=\"College Majors and Minors \/ Graduate Programs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/cps\/Pages\/programs.aspx\">minors<\/a> and six <a title=\"College Majors and Minors \/ Graduate Programs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/cps\/Pages\/programs.aspx\">graduate<\/a> programs, enrolling about 2,880 undergraduates and 1,200 graduate and continuing education students. <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has announced a new name and restructuring for one of its schools.
