HPW Student Internship Experience – Jackie Schommer 15′<\/strong><\/p>\n

Interning with the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department allowed me to gain valuable skills working in both community and employee wellness. During my internship I had the opportunity to shadow dietitians and personal trainers, proof the spring and summer recreation guides, create flyers for wellness classes offered at the recreation centers, lead Youth Health Fair and Let\u2019s Move! meetings,
\nand help further develop the Let\u2019s Move! initiative in Boulder by creating an action plan. The majority of my internship was spent coordinating the inaugural Youth Health Fair and providing wellness coaching and supervised exercise sessions to city employees who enrolled in the Health Improvement Program.<\/p>\n

  1. Behavior Change:\n

    1. Job shadow trainers and dietitian<\/li>\n
    2. \u00a0Teach a worksite fitness class<\/li>\n
    3. Lead walks for employee Walking Wednesday Program<\/li>\n
    4. Create Let\u2019s Move nutrition and physical activities for spring break camp.<\/li>\n
    5. Assist with the youth health fair in March.<\/li>\n
    6. Work with clients enrolled in EXPAND.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
    7. Promotion and Marketing:\n
        \n
      1. Prepare overhead marketing display ads<\/li>\n
      2. Write new fitness and weight class descriptions to inspire registration<\/li>\n
      3. Create an operations manual of the Wellness Works program<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
      4. Organizational Experiences:\n
          \n
        1. Attend wellness meetings and optional council and board meetings<\/li>\n
        2. Research and complete grant applications<\/li>\n
        3. Assist in preparing biweekly payroll, review expense reports and assist in budget meeting preparations<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
