The semester got hectic and then the time right after the semester was too&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Before things get hectic again, I want to share some posts about some of my 3D printing adventures during the past three months. After my last post, I printed the Volumes of Hanoi. The first parts I printed were the original solid of revolution, the innermost cylindrical shell, and the cylinder that is two shells out from the center. They worked great.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/math\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/10\/Towers1-e1477355675470-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"towers1\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/math\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/10\/Towers2b-e1484590587267-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"TowersOfHanoiDisks\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Next, I set it going on the four disks (which look like washers since a hole was drilled so we can put them on the stand\/base).<\/p>\n<p>Then I measured the pieces from the first print to see how closely they matched the design. They looked pretty close, but I gave myself a little more wiggle room by adjusting the design for the other two shells in Tinkercad. I also adjusted the base to make it a little shorter. It seemed to be too long for my build plate, but that was easy to change. Maybe I could have scaled the whole thing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>No problems with the disks! Next are the last two cylindrical shells.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/math\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/10\/Towers3a-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"towers3a\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uwsp.edu\/math\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/10\/Towers3b-e1477355934286-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"towers3b\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I think this set helped my Calculus II students see the different ways to chop up a solid, which helps you decide what to integrate to find the exact volume.
