Volumes of Hanoi

I am back! The semester got hectic and then the time right after the semester was too…

Before things get hectic again, I want to share some posts about some of my 3D printing adventures during the past three months. After my last post, I printed the Volumes of Hanoi. The first parts I printed were the original solid of revolution, the innermost cylindrical shell, and the cylinder that is two shells out from the center. They worked great.

Next, I set it going on the four disks (which look like washers since a hole was drilled so we can put them on the stand/base).

Then I measured the pieces from the first print to see how closely they matched the design. They looked pretty close, but I gave myself a little more wiggle room by adjusting the design for the other two shells in Tinkercad. I also adjusted the base to make it a little shorter. It seemed to be too long for my build plate, but that was easy to change. Maybe I could have scaled the whole thing…

No problems with the disks! Next are the last two cylindrical shells.towers3atowers3b

I think this set helped my Calculus II students see the different ways to chop up a solid, which helps you decide what to integrate to find the exact volume. They are much better than my chalk drawings!
