Sharing a room is part of the college experience. Like any relationship, it takes communication, compromise and kindness to make it work.
Students should approach roommate life with an open mind and a willingness to grow. Maybe they’re longtime friends or maybe they are just meeting for the first time. A respectful living environment sets the foundation for a great year.
Here are some helpful strategies:
Set Expectations Early
It’s important for roommates to discuss habits and boundaries from the start. Topics might include sleeping schedules, cleaning routines, noise levels, sharing items and having guests over.
Create Rituals Together
A simple weekly lunch, shared TV time or celebrating wins can build connection.
Be Courteous
Respecting each other’s space, saying good morning, and offering encouragement can go a long way.
Talk It Out
Disagreements may happen, and that’s okay. Open communication is key. RAs are always available to help guide roommates through challenges.
