We are excited to announce that Burroughs Hall and Knutzen Hall have been outfitted with brand-new desks, dressers and chairs, which provide an upgraded living experience for our residents! This is part of our ongoing effort to enhance your living spaces, focusing on what you want and need—customization and safety. Here is a quick overview of the updates and what they mean for you.
Innovative Desk Replacement
The new furniture setup replaces traditional desks with a versatile combination consisting of a table and a separate storage pedestal. This design provides several benefits such as enhancing your comfort and allowing for personalized room configurations. The absence of a fixed hutch further increases flexibility, accommodating various organizational preferences.
- Customizable Layout: The table and pedestal can be positioned to suit right-handed or left-handed use or placed elsewhere to create more legroom or storage space.
- Enhanced Mobility: Without a fixed drawer system and hutch, you can easily rearrange your rooms to fit your study habits and personal preferences.
- Open Workspace: The lack of a hutch offers a large, adaptable surface for various uses for living and learning, whether for studying, storage, cooking, dining, crafting, gaming and more.
This update aims to provide you with a more adaptable and comfortable living environment that can be tailored to individual needs and styles.
Dresser Design for Safety and Functionality
You might notice that the new dressers are shorter than the previous dressers, a change driven by recent safety regulations. The STURDY Act (Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth), passed into law in Sept. 2023, mandates that free-standing clothing storage units over a certain size must be anchored to prevent tipping injuries. By choosing shorter dressers, we ensure compliance with this law while still offering flexible room arrangements.
Key Features of the New Dressers:
- Safety Compliance: The shorter design allows you to move your dressers freely without the need for anchoring, adhering to the STURDY Act requirements.
- Functional Storage: The shorter height makes it easier to place the dresser in closets, providing additional room for hanging long items above it.
- Spacious Drawers: Each drawer measures 33 inches wide, 6 inches tall, and 21 inches deep, offering ample space for your clothing and belongings.
We are committed to creating a safe, comfortable, and adaptable living environment for our students. The new furniture is designed with flexibility and safety in mind, allowing you to customize your space and make it truly your own.
