Loftable Beds 101: Bed Dimensions and Lofting Instructions

No Comments on Loftable Beds 101: Bed Dimensions and Lofting Instructions

UWSP’s Housing and Residence Life is committed to improving the living experience for our students. One way we do this is by offering the option for students to loft their beds, which maximizes room space and creates a more comfortable and versatile living environment. A self-lofting bed is provided for each student so there is no need to buy/rent/borrow/build a loft. It’s already in the room. Knowing details about the bed and mattress, as well as how to safely loft a bed, can help you make the most of your room. Here’s what you need to know about these features and the benefits they offer for you.

Bed Frame Details

Steel Loftable Bed Frame:

  • Dimensions: The black steel loftable bed frame measures 86 inches in length, 39 inches in depth, and up to 60 inches in height.
  • Adjustable Heights: The loft height is adjustable in increments of approximately 2-5/8 inches, allowing you to customize the bed height to your preference. This flexibility is particularly useful for creating storage space under the bed.
  • End Rails: Each end guard rail (headboard/footboard) has an integrated ladder with 5 rungs, 4 inches high each, rounded.
  • Internal Measurements: The internal rail-to-rail length is 80 inches, providing ample space for a standard twin XL mattress and even accommodating a standard futon within this distance. When fully lofted, there is approximately 56 inches of vertical space below the springs.

Mattress Specifications Twin XL Mattress:

  • Dimensions: Each mattress is 80 inches long, 38 inches deep, and 6 inches high.
  • Comfort: The twin XL size offers sufficient space and firm support for you, fitting perfectly within the steel bed frame. Many students choose to customize their comfort by adding a foam mattress topper.

Bed Configuration and SafetyAdjusting Bed Height:

  • Safety First: In order to prevent injury or property damage, it is recommended that all bed adjustments are performed by two individuals.
  • Important Steps: When changing the bed height or configuration, disengage both hooks on each end of the spring. Failure to do so can damage the bed frame.
  • Procedure: To properly adjust the height, lift up on the spring while placing one foot on the lower cross rail to disengage the hooks. Sometimes, an upward tap under the corner connection may be necessary to dislodge the spring hooks from the steel rods embedded in the ends.

Guard Rails:

  • Dimensions: Each guard rail is approximately 51 inches long, 16 inches tall, with 1-inch rounded edge square pipes.
  • Safety Recommendation: Guard rails are highly recommended for all spring heights to prevent falls and ensure student safety.
  • Installation: To attach a guard rail, slide the mattress so the guard rail can lay flat on the spring. Engage the two brackets of the guard rail with the spring and raise it to the vertical position. Once the mattress is repositioned, it will hold the guard rail upright.

Additional Considerations

  • Space Utilization: By setting the bed at a higher height, you can place items underneath your bed, significantly saving space and increasing room arrangement options.
  • Maintenance: Regularly check the stability of your bed and ensure that the hooks and springs are securely in place to avoid any accidents or damage.
  • Note: All furniture provided by the university must remain in the assigned room.

We hope this information helps you understand the bed and mattress setup in UWSP residence halls and how you can make the most of your living space. Knowing how to complete these adjustments can make a significant difference in your comfort and safety. Thank you for being a part of the UWSP community!
