Winter Break Housing Information

No Comments on Winter Break Housing Information

As the Fall 2024 semester winds down, many students are wondering how they can prepare for the transition into Winter Break. While all of this (and more) has already been emailed to all of you, we know it’s a busy time of the semester and wanted to provide some basic information in case the email is lost in your inbox.

1. Finals Week Quiet Hours

We encourage you to respect finals week quiet hours, which help create an environment conducive to studying and success.

  • Start: Friday, December 15, at 11:59 p.m.
  • End: Friday, December 20, at 6 p.m.

Students may engage in moderate activities like vacuuming or moving furniture during Daily Relaxed Quiet Hours (11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.), but overall noise should remain minimal.

2. Winter Break Housing and Desk Operations

  • The front desk of most residence halls will close at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 20, and reopen at 10 a.m. on Sunday, January 19.
  • Only the front desk at Suites@201 will be open during the break, with desk operations available daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For students staying during the break, registration is required via the UWSP Housing Portal under “Winter Break Housing Registration.” There is no additional cost for students with Spring 2025 housing assignments.

3. Departure Checklist for Students Returning in Spring

Prepare your room to avoid fees or damage charges:

  • Remove all trash and recycling.
  • Ensure heat is ON, windows are locked, and unused electronics are unplugged.
  • Take home perishable items.
  • Lock the door and bring all keys home.

Health and Safety Checks will occur after the final exam period to verify completion of these tasks.

4. For Students NOT Returning for Spring 2025

Students who are graduating, studying abroad, or leaving UWSP for other reasons must complete an in-person checkout with a Resident Assistant (RA) by Friday, December 20, at 6 p.m.

Follow these steps:

  • Submit a Spring 2025 cancellation request if not already done.
  • Remove all personal belongings and clean your room thoroughly (dust, vacuum, empty trash, and adjust bed height).
  • Close and lock all windows.

Common Checkout Fees:

  • Improper Checkout: $50
  • Cleaning Fees: $30+ (depending on severity)
  • Lost Key: $50
  • Late Checkout: $25 per every 15 minutes past 6 p.m.

5. Important Dates to Remember

  • December 15: Finals Week Quiet Hours begin.
  • December 20: Fall semester ends; front desks close at 6 p.m.
  • December 31: Deadline for Spring 2025 meal plan changes.
  • January 19: Residence halls front desks reopen at 10 a.m.

By staying proactive and following these guidelines, you can finish the semester smoothly and avoid unnecessary stress or fees. If you have questions or concerns, the Housing Portal and hall staff are available to assist.

We hope everyone enjoys the Winter Break!
