Are You Career-Ready?

We know that students come to college out of an intrinsic interest in learning and to prepare for a professional career after graduation. Are you taking care of some of the non-classroom career prep to-dos? Here are some ideas that might fit into your summer downtime:

  • Pull together professional outfits that you will be able to wear to an interview during the coming school year. The clothes need to fit. Don’t forget the details like belts and shoes!
  • Do you have a 10/10 resume? The Academic and Career Advising Center provides sample resumes by discipline on their website, if you need some inspiration. The ACAC is happy to review a draft with you in a virtual appointment this summer.
  • Handshake is where students find professional internships and early career jobs. Each student is provided a Handshake profile (Logins drop down from the UWSP homepage), but then students need to add their experience, a picture of themself, etc. before applying for positions. Summer is a great time to update that Handshake profile and get comfortable navigating the platform.
  • Campus offers two All-Major Career and Internship Fairs each school year. This coming school year they will take place on Thursday, September 18 and Tuesday, February 10. More than 100 regional employers will be in attendance to chat with students about opportunities at their organizations. Add these dates to your calendar before summer wraps up and check them out! Several majors also host smaller fairs that are also a great opportunity.

We want you to thrive after graduation. Summer is a great time to get ahead on some of these tasks that are hard to fit into the school year. Thanks for making time for these items when you have capacity. It’ll reduce stress and increase success later on!
