Starting college can be intimidating. You are in a new place with a whole bunch of new people – it can be nerve-wracking to try and figure out how to start a conversation. Here are my recommendations on how to meet new people.
- Get involved!
- By far, the easiest way to meet people is to get involved. Here at UWSP, we have more than 200 clubs/groups that your student can be a part of. There is something for everybody! Check out bulletin boards or postings on SPIN for
- Leave your door open!
- When you are in the mood to meet new people, prop open your door. This is a universal sign that shows that you are comfortable with people stopping in to say hi!
- Attend campus events!
- There are also events happening all the time on campus, held by a multitude of clubs. Using SPIN (Stevens Point Involvement Network), you can see what events are happening and who is hosting them. It is a great resource for learning about the different organization on campus and meet the people who are apart of them.
- Utilize Campus Resources!
- If you are looking for more specific support, the QRC (Queer Resourse Center), the MRC (Multicultural Resource Center), and the NAC (Native American Center) provide a community as well as assistance for the students involved.
The best thing you can do is to put yourself out there! You are not alone in how you are feeling – there are so many students in the same boat as you also looking for their support system!
