There are few things in college more intimidating than trying to find an internship. It is the official start of your professional career and there is always pressure to find the best internship possible. There are a few things to keep in mind when sending in those applications.  

In 2024, you are going to be able to find multiple different types of internships: some internships with require you to be there in person but there are also many remote options available, or even a hybrid of both. Deciding your preference here is going to narrow down your options and hopefully make you less overwhelmed with the options.  

When you are looking for internships, one of the easiest ways is by using a job search website such as LinkedIn, Glassdoor and Handshake. LinkedIn allows you to create a professional profile that makes the application portion a bit simpler. Glassdoor has a section called “Glassdoor for Students” that allows you to search for specific opportunities. Shop around, use multiple websites, and start applying. 

Refining your resume is an important step to any application process. The Academic and Career Advising Center (ACAC) on campus has many resources for building your resume, so either check out their online portal or make an appointment with one of their advisors! 

Students are told from the moment that they enter campus that one of the most important things they can do is network – and it is completely true. Put out some feelers and see if you know anyone who is aware of internship opportunities. Word of mouth is a very powerful and can definitely be an advantage in getting you in the door.  

After you have secured an internship, make sure you keep your advisor in the loop. They will let you know of any specific applications that you need to complete within the university to get approved for the internship credits. It is also likely that you will need letters of recommendation, whether for the university or for the internships themselves. Most professors will be willing to help you out, so make sure you contact them sooner rather than later! 

Finding an internship can be scary, but the experience is also very valuable. Learning how to navigate the application process will make future professional exchanged seem more manageable.
