BA vs. BS- What’s the difference?

No Comments on BA vs. BS- What’s the difference?

At UWSP, we have a few different degree options for undergraduate students. One of the most common questions we receive is—what is the difference between Bachelor of Arts versus Bachelor of Science?

Bachelor of Arts (BA)

The Bachelor of Arts degree is intended to develop skills and talents essential to succeeding in a global society. It usually focuses on the study of arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, combined with an advanced critical inquiry and an in-depth knowledge of the major a student is in.

The BA program develops cultural, social, and political literacy, including the ability to communicate effectively, and understanding a basic level of another world language. So, BA candidates are required to take a two-semester sequence of world language courses (101, 102). This requirement can be fulfilled if a student is fluent enough to test out of world language.

Some programs that fall underneath this category is English, Arts Management, History, etc.

Bachelor of Science (BS)

The Bachelor of Science degree is more focused on developing skills and talents essential to professional work. Like the BA, it still focuses on the study of arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, combined with an advanced critical inquiry and an in-depth knowledge of the major a student is in.

One difference is that a BS program develops a deeper understanding of scientific methodology, empirical knowledge, and quantitative techniques. It equips a student for continued engagement in professional research within their chosen field.

Another difference is that a BS program does not require students to take a world language course as a requirement.

Programs that fall under this category are Business, Biology, Data Analytics, Education, etc.
