Now that we have made it through the first few weeks of school and things are starting to settle down, you might be realizing you’re a little homesick. While you may not be able to go home this weekend, UW-Stevens Point wants to bring home to you. This Saturday, Sept. 18 is Family Day here at UWSP. On Family Day, the campus and community will be hosting a ton of activities for you and your family to participate in. With so many options, you’ll find something fun for everyone. Here are some of the activities that I am most looking forward to.

On-campus activities start bright and early at 9 a.m. on Saturday. If you’re not a morning person, your first stop should be the Basement Brewhouse in the Dreyfus University Center (DUC) for an amazing cup of coffee. After you are energized for the day, head over to the Chemistry Biology Building. You may be saying, “Emily, I am no scientist!” Regardless of your major, you’re going to want to get liquid nitrogen ice cream from the Department of Chemistry starting at 10 a.m. After you are full of coffee and ice cream, expose your parents to your living community by having them participate in your residence hall’s Family Day program.

After a full morning, head over to the Nice to Z Ya! Party happening in lot Z outside the DUC at 11 a.m. There will be DIY crafts, yard games and inflatables! At 2 p.m., head over to Goerke Field to watch Pointer Football’s home opener against UW-Stout. It also happens to be our charity Pink Game. You can help the Pointer football team raise money for breast cancer awareness by purchasing Pink Game apparel at the game. Don’t forget to wear pink and bring your student ID to get into the game for free!

Family Day is also a great way to explore the Stevens Point area. There is a wide range of events happening in the community for you and your family to check out! For nature lovers, the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center will be open. After you see all the Visitor Center has to offer, you can go on a hike through Schmeeckle either by yourself or on guided tours happening at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. While in Schmeeckle, make sure to go check out the free canoeing happening on Lake Joanis. If hiking is not for you don’t fret! Go check out Art in the Park starting at 10 a.m. at Pfiffner Pioneer Park or the Wood Carving Show Competition and Sale at the Holiday Inn.

At the end of the day, if you still have energy, the Stevens Point Sculpture Park is hosting a LIT event starting at 8 p.m. LIT is a live art event with dance performances, music and illuminated sculptures. Grab your family and your flashlight and explore the Sculpture Park in a way you never have before!

Saturday is such a great opportunity to spend time with your family in this place you call home. To get more information about the activities happening on and off-campus, visit https://www.uwsp.edu/familyday/Pages/default.aspx or students can check out the SPIN website event information. We can’t wait to see all the Pointer families enjoying the weekend together here in Point. Have an amazing time everyone.
