Some of the best lessons are not found in a textbook, but rather come in the form of personal connections. That was evident as Sue Buck, president of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS), visited the FCS 290: Exploring Family and Consumer Sciences class at UW-Stevens Point.
Buck spoke to Susan Turgeson’s class about her background in Illinois and Oklahoma before moving to her current position as coordinator of the Leadership Academy at UW Colleges and UW-Extension. The consistent message was the importance of being involved in associations and making connections that will help professionally and personally. She also emphasized students need to keep the passion for their profession and that, “Leadership is not an affair of the head. Leadership is an affair of the heart.”
Buck encouraged the class to step into a leadership position and left the students with this piece of advice: “Try it. Leave your comfort zone and just try it.”
