HPW Student Internship Perspective – Tyler Cornell 16′
Interning within the Verizon Wireless Health and Wellness Center was an amazing experience! I was able to do a wide variety of things such as teach group fitness, personal train, coordinate events, perform fitness assessments, create a fitness incentive program, promote a healthy culture, and many more productive and interactive things. On a daily basis I was able to interact with members of the health and wellness center that were on many different levels and stages of the wellness spectrum. Being that there was a very diverse population with varying needs, I was able to get optimal experience while working with groups as well as one on one. My favorite part about interning with Verizon was the guidance and opportunity that my supervisors provided me. Before my time with them, I had no experience teaching an organized group exercise class. By stepping out of my comfort zone and having support I was able to create my own barbell class in addition to teaching cardio kickboxing and spin on a weekly basis. Promoting a healthy lifestyle and obtaining engagement from the employees within this Verizon center was also a large part of my overall experience. I was given the opportunity to create promotional and informative material to post in the wellness center and in many high traffic areas of the facility. In addition, I was able to create a lunch-and-learn to present to a small group of employees to create awareness and discussion about exercise and overall well-being.
