HPW Student Internship Experience – Rogue Larson Spring 17′
Quite the experience interning at SCSU. If you have never heard the saying, “hit the ground running,” you would here. I was immediately involved in professional staff meetings, worker staff meetings and meetings with other people around campus to assist in organizing and running big campus programs. These programs were all things that centered on trying to get the student community involved at our rec center where I spent most of my time working. One of our biggest beginning of the year programs was the SCSU 6 Week on the Move challenge, which consisted of weekly health challenges and fitness workouts and all contestants would keep track of their points. One of the challenges that would appear weakly would be Wellness Coaching. I was the new primary wellness coach and I would meet with clients on a weekly basis and discuss health goals in all of the dimensions of wellness. I was trained in for front desk duties as well as taking clients through our 11-step beginner’s workout called “Vital 11.” I would assist clients in the gym with their workouts as far as form and what exercises to do depending on their fitness goals. It was a real life work experience, especially with all of the meetings to go which really gives you a good snapshot of the work field in health. For our “Free Fitness Week” advertising campaign, I was in charge of standing at booths around the campus for the full week advertising for programs that we had to offer at or rec facility as well as the newly created Wellness Coaching program.
