HPW Student Internship Experience – Amanda Grubba 16′
Interning at the Stevens Point Area YMCA (SPYMCA) has been a wonderful experience so far. I have had a variety of responsibilities and learning opportunities. I have used an assortment of skills that I learned throughout the HPW program, including some I didn’t think I would ever use. The main focus of my internship is assisting in the planning and promoting the 2016 Stevens Point Duathlon. This includes numerous tasks and responsibilities, some of which I haven’t had any hands on experience with. I have consistently marketed the Duathlon through Facebook, including running two ads and posting weekly. I have worked with the graphic designer to come up with a fun t-shirt design, as well as designs for the kids’ and adults’ medals. I have gone out to businesses within the community to hang posters and brochures. I have contacted members, employees and organizations for volunteers for the event. I have contacted other local businesses and obtained door prizes for our participants. I have also contributed two completely new ideas to make the Duathlon stand out among other races, which include a Kids’ Zone for children to hang out at during the race, as well as offering a full baked potato bar for the participants as well. I was able to get Rockman’s Catering to bake and deliver the potatoes free of charge. The potatoes are also being donated by Okray Family Farms. I held two kids practice run, one at Camp Glacier Hollow, and one with sports camp at the SPYMCA. Other things I have done not regarding the duathlon include running a 10 week Healthy Household Family Challenge on Facebook, creating a 12 month challenge for the SPYMCA phone app to increase downloads and member retention, create a spreadsheet to collect and keep data for all group fitness classes and help write a grant for the Farm to School Program. I am currently working with the graphic designer to make exercise & stretching posters for in the wellness center. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at the SPYMCA and have learned a great deal about how non-profits work as well.
