Rebecca Sommer has been named the associate dean of the College of Professional Studies and department head of the UW-Stevens Point School of Health Care Professions, announced CPS Dean Marty Loy.
Sommer, who replaces Sue Raab as department head, holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and a B.S. in Pharmacology and Toxicology from UW-Madison. She previously served as the academic adviser in SCHP for four years, helping students better understand the many professional opportunities in health care.
Prior to arriving at UW-Stevens Point, Sommer was a tenured faculty member at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She taught pharmacology, toxicology, cancer biology, general biology and topical seminar courses while conducting research funded by the National Institutes of Health.
“I look forward to working with the faculty and staff to advance our mission of increasing the number of quality educational experiences available to students pursuing careers in health care,” said Sommer.
The School of Health Care Professions is one of the largest growing departments in recent years. Majors include athletic training, clinical laboratory science (options in medical technology, cytotechnology, histotechnology), health science (options in health care administration, health care informatics, pre-athletic training, pre-physical therapy and pre-occupational therapy), BSN completion program, pre-nursing and health information management technology.
