Clinical Laboratory Science students set for Practicums

After an extensive interview process with health care organizations, 37 students in the clinical laboratory science (CLS) program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point are set to be placed at hospitals around the state for clinical practicums beginning in fall 2018. [View Photos]

“There are entry-level expectations for new graduates which could not be achieved at the university alone because we cannot simulate the interactions between physicians and nurses, phone calls with other departments, inpatient and outpatient customer service, working with current instrumentation, etc.” says Senior Lecturer Michelle Shulfer. “Students benefit tremendously from these real-life experiences. They are ready to hit the ground running in their first job because of these clinical practicums.”

Housed within the School of Health Care Professions, the CLS program at UW-Stevens Point is among the largest in the state and one of only three in the state with national accreditation. UW-Stevens Point offers three options in clinical laboratory science program: cytotechnology, histotechnology and medical technology. Students must complete a clinical practicum in order to fulfill the requirements for national certification.
