Overall Goal of Internship
Gain experience and knowledge in the areas of health and wellness in a community
organization. Obtain experience in behavior change facilitation, promotion and marketing, and
organizational experience approved by the site supervisor.

Objectives

  1. Behavior Change:
    1. At the completion of this internship, intern will be able to present clinical findings of a
      community-based organization and its progress towards becoming more accessible via the web and cell phone devices.
    2. Teach and participate in monthly dances at the African American Art & Culture Complex.
    3. Tabulate health metrics (such as glucose, AIC, blood pressure, weight, demographics, and
      quality of life) of participants who attend monthly dances.
    4. Telephone Dance Out Diabetes participants at least once in between the monthly dances
      for follow-up on program satisfaction, exercise frequency, reminders about upcoming
      dances, requests for music, etc.
  2. Promotion and Marketing:
    1. Facilitate marketing by keeping community calendars up-to-date with Dance Out
      Diabetes dances and events.
    2. Update the Dance Out Diabetes website and provide social media /marketing and updates
      on Facebook.
    3. Create a cell phone application participants can use to access Dance Out Diabetes
      programs.
  3. Organizational:
    1. Develop Dance Out Diabetes plan to increase access via web-based activities, such as
      video recordings and dances, to users who are unable to participate in the Dance Out
      Diabetes events in San Francisco.
    2. Summarize the structure used for at least 2 existing online structured exercise programs
      (this assessment will help us gain ideas on how to build our web-based access).
    3. Provide instruction to and be a resource for participants on how to use our online patient
      portal.
    4. Participate in all Board of Director or related teleconferences and meetings.
    5. Meet with the Executive Director at least 3 times per month and hold at least bi-weekly
      conference calls to discuss status of and need for support of goals.
    6. Create a list of popular dance venues that would be used as the outline for filming related
      dance instructors to post on our website. This may include:

      1. Instructing dances
      2. Identifying the videographer
      3. Planning and managing the budget
      4. Helping to create playlists for web-based users to access
