Overall Goal of Internship
At completion of this internship, the intern will gain an excellent understanding and knowledge of how
USAA provides a variety of health and wellness programs to their employees. The intern will gain
experience in behavior change facilitation including assessment, intervention and reassessment. Create
promotional and marketing projects to increase participation or sales. The organizational experiences
will allow for some supervision of an event, small budget experiences and in service training, shadowing
of the internship supervisor. The intern will work and be supervised by the USAA Fitness
Center/Internship Coordinator on-site internship supervisor. The intern will complete experiences as
outlined by the following specific objectives and be evaluated upon performance in each of these areas.

Objectives

  1. Behavior:
    1. Learn and teach a variety of group exercise classes.
    2. Do a case study on multiple new fitness center members; include assessing them,
      designing and implementing a program, and reassess after specific amount of time.

      1. Perform all inclusive fitness assessment: resting heart rate and blood pressure, height
        and weight, body composition, strength testing, flexibility and submax bicycle ergometer.
    3. Monitor and interact with fitness center members on a daily basis.
      1. Monitor heart rate, blood pressure
      2. Assist with weight training techniques
      3. Assist with warm up, cool down, flexibility
  2. Promotion and Marketing:
    1. Present 30 minute “lunch and learn” to USAA employees with power point slide show.
    2. Create and administer an incentive program event o all USAA fitness center members to
      participate in.
    3. Create a bulletin board with health/wellness/fitness information for members’.
    4. Promote recreational activity for employees.
      1. Weekend event with family members
  3. Organizational Experiences:
    1. Attend weekly intern meetings.
    2. Staff assistant- spend time with 2 new employee’s each week to learn about each
      one and what each employee does.
    3. Improve and learn budgeting materials.
    4. Plan, organize and implement an entire weekend recreational event for employees.

Hours
Minimum 400 hours, 40 hrs/week
Scheduled: M-F
First week is orientation hours 9am-3pm
Weeks 2 and beyond, alternate between early, middle or late shift:
Early shift 6am-2:30pm; Middle shift 8am-4:30pm; Late shift 9:30am-6pm

Stipend
Performance based stipend at the end of internship
