Retired Professor of Military Science John Grant “Jack” Porter, 91, died on Jan. 18, 2023.
After graduating from West Point in 1954, Porter enjoyed a 21-year military career. His final assignment was as professor of Military Science at UW-Stevens Point during what was a turbulent time for those in the military. In spite of this he expanded and introduced new programs especially creating opportunities for women.
Retiring in 1975, Porter and his family decided Stevens Point was a good place to put down roots. During his career he received many military awards, among them: The Bronze Star with 1 oak leaf cluster, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal (Berlin).
In retirement, Porter attended many events in the College of Professional Studies and was an active volunteer in the community and was a Deacon/Elder with Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church. He served many years on the Community Parks Improvement Committee, the Rotary Club of Stevens Point, and the UWSP Backcourt Club Coaches Committee. Porter was a regular at the YMCA until recently, played tennis for many years, and enthusiastically followed sports, the Green Bay Packers and most sports at UWSP. In 2010, Porter and his wife Cynny received the Alumni Service Award for their support of UWSP over the years.
