An innovative approach of delivering college courses is allowing high school students to explore potential professions before they enroll in college. Eight students from Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH) are earning college credit by enrolling in Introduction to Athletic Training via video telepresence technology at UW-Stevens Point this semester. SPASH students and university undergraduates are dual enrolled in the two-credit course that is co-taught by Danelle Smith and Greg Marty, while SPASH athletic trainers Linda Haller and Alicia Belant facilitate at the high school. Students participate via live video telepresence with UW-Stevens Point students on campus in the Center for Collaborative and Interactive Technologies (CCIT).

“It’s a new way of teaching and an opportunity to reach students we wouldn’t normally be able to teach,” said Smith.

In the course, students gain an overview of the athletic training profession, history and growth. They also learn about the concept of the sports medicine team, athletic training room policies, procedures, medical record keeping and commonly used supplies.

This is the first time UW-Stevens Point has offered dual enrollment through video. It’s an opportunity to use new methods of teaching for on-site and distance students as well as university and high school students.

“We’re really excited about engaging both sides in a cohesive learning experience,” said Marty.

The Wisconsin Technology Initiative grant funded the telepresence technology necessary for remote live instruction in the CCIT at UW-Stevens Point. John and Tashia Morgridge established the Wisconsin Technology Initiative to provide grants to K-12 schools and other educational facilities that are committed to effectively integrating instructional technology into their learning environments.
